Tree work in Cape Tribulation

Private blocks inside the lowland rainforest

Cape Tribulation holds one of Australia's last extensive stands of lowland rainforest, and most of that forest is national park. Tree work here means private land only: a limb over a roof, a dead tree beside a cabin, a palm leaning toward a shed.

Rare trees grow in the forest nearby, the unique Idiospermum australiense among them. That is one more reason the boundary is confirmed before any cutting starts.

Cape Tribulation questions

Getting in and out after a cyclone

How did Cyclone Jasper affect Cape Tribulation?

Jasper made landfall as a category 2 system just north of the cape and brought days of heavy rain. The Noah Range landslip that followed left the Cape Tribulation community isolated for months.

What happens to timber and waste up here?

Disposal takes planning this far north. After Jasper, a barge brought fuel and food to Cape Tribulation and took bagged food waste out, but large hard items had to stay.

Can a tree threatening a house come down before approval?

State rules exempt clearing that reduces the imminent risk the vegetation poses to people or infrastructure. Douglas Shire planning rules still need checking for anything less urgent.
