Tree work in Wonga Beach

Septic fields, wetlands and wet ground

Wonga Beach is flanked by both beach and wetlands, with the Daintree National Park looking down on it. Ground stays wet for long stretches, and wet ground is where shallow-rooted trees tip.

Town sewerage has not reached much of it: there are about 400 houses which are unsewered. On those blocks the septic tank and its drain field need to be found before a stump is ground or a machine crosses the yard.

Wonga Beach questions

Floods, foreshore planting and permits

Is flooding in Wonga Beach being studied?

Yes. Douglas Shire Council is reviewing the Wonga Beach flood study and drainage assessment to better understand flood behaviour in the community. Trees on low ground are worth checking for lean before each wet.

Who planted the trees along the beach?

Council, Daintree Life and volunteers replaced a patch of weeds with more than 500 native trees on the foreshore. That planting is public land, so private work stops at the boundary.

How does an owner check whether a permit applies?

Douglas Shire Council says residents can often decide for themselves with the table of assessment and the vegetation management code.
