Tree work in Whitfield

Living below Mount Whitfield

The park's two main hills are Mount Whitfield (360m) and Lumley Hill (290m), and Whitfield's houses sit below them. Blocks near the park can slope hard, which decides how a big tree comes down.

The hills are made of rocks of the Barron River formation, the same kind exposed around Barron Falls. A stump grinder on a slope here can hit stone not far down.

Mount Whitfield was gazetted as a conservation park in 1989, and council manages it with the state's parks service. Trees inside the park are never part of a private job.

Whitfield questions

The bush over the back fence

What kind of bush is behind the houses?

Mostly vine forest with acacias, mixed with medium to low woodland of eucalypts and acacias. It belongs to the park, so work stops at your own boundary.

Can park trees that overhang my yard be cut back?

Not on your say so. Residents are not permitted to modify, prune or remove public trees without a council permit, so council is the first call.

Does every tall tree need approval to remove?

Not every one, but council treats a private tree greater than 7.5m in height as a significant tree. Height is measured from natural ground level to the top of the crown.

Tall tree on a slope?

Have it taken down in sections
